Effective September 30, 2025, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will phase out paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers. This move is part of the effort to streamline and modernize IRS processes as outlined in Executive Order 14247.
The IRS will release details about potential changes in the 2025 tax filing process prior to the upcoming 2026 tax season.
What this means for you:
- Until the IRS publishes changes, you should continue to file taxes as you have in the past, including 2024 extensions that you are still in the process of filing.
- For now, you can still send paper checks for your quarterly estimated payments to the IRS.
- Tax refunds issued from the IRS after September 30, 2025 will only be issued via direct deposit. If you do not have access to online banking, you may apply for alternate options such as a prepaid debit card, a digital wallet or IRS electronic savings bonds.
- If you are a client of Cooper, Adel, Vu Tax Services, we will file your direct deposit (or alternate option) information with your 2025 tax return.
- If you are not a Cooper, Adel, Vu Tax Services client and you have questions or need assistance, contact your tax preparer.
